The Halmahera Giant Gecko is a large gecko from the Indonesian island of Halmahera. Sometimes referred to as the “poor man’s leachy” because of its similarity to the R. leachianus (New Caledonian Giant Gecko) in color and body shape. Halmaheras are more slender than a Leachy and also resemble the more common gargoyle gecko.
We recently acquired a pair of Halmahera’s for the store. These are most likely wild caught, as are most of the Halmahera on the market, but have been in the possession of a local gecko enthusiast for several months and appear healthy and are fairly tame.
If you would like more information on this amazing species, there is a great post at the Gecko Time Blog.
